Islay Grass Fire out of Control

This morning we noticed a large grass fire near Laggan Bay. Farmers sometimes burn grass land to encourage the grass to grow harder but this particular fire got out of hand and spread over quite a large area near the airport. From what I’ve been told the airport had to be closed as well as the low road between Bowmore and Port Ellen. The smoke was thick and smelly and was very unpleasant. The fire brigade was at the scene and when we were at Port Charlotte later in the afternoon we could still see the smoke rising up in the air. The strong wind and lack of rain in the last weeks makes it hard to stop the fire and I don’t want to think about the many birds that are nesting in the area....
